Fine Art and Antique Auction 27th November 2013

Our most recent Fine Art auction got off to a good start with lot 19, a Newport Pottery Clarice Cliff Bizarre "Secrets" pattern triangular shaped vase, estimated at £300-500 which sold for a massive £950 to a commission bidder.

A commission bid also secured lot 38, a Lalique opaque glass "Fontainebleau" vase decorated with scrolls and grapes, for £800, exceeding its upper estimate by £300.

Royal Doulton figures of Henry VIII and his six wives sold for £340 and £500, and the sale saw a huge collection of Hummel figures sell for prices ranging from £45 for four figures up to £500 for a figure group.  Highlights were lot 118, “Ring Around the Rosie” which sold for £300,  lot 135 “St Nicholas Day” and “Knecht Ruprecht Ruprecht” which were very relevant for the season and sold for £220, and 147 “World Wide Wanders” which sold for £500.

A large model of a bronze elephant with ivory tusks sold for £340 and we had two interesting lots of vintage alcohol, the first being 11 bottles of port which sold for £300 and the second, a last issue of Royal Naval rum in a sealed gallon barrel and basket.  The last Royal Naval rum ration was on 31st July 1970 and became known as "Black Tot Day" as the sailors were unhappy about the loss of the rum ration. This lot sold for £340.

Gold and jewellery continued to sell well with four full sovereigns dated 1891 and 1925 selling for £670, gold chains weighing 39.3 grams selling for £390 and an 18ct gold emerald ring which sold for £340 being among the top sellers.

Watches also held their value with a gentleman’s 18ct gold pocket watch selling at the top of its estimate at £500 and Omega and Rolex gentlemen’s watches selling for £300 and £780.

Lot 452, a silver four piece tea set, Sheffield 1953, made by Harrison Brothers and Howson, sold above it’s upper estimate at £550 and lot 440, a silver oak two handled tray with silver pierced gallery dated 1895, sold for £300.

We had an interesting collection of art work from a wide range of eras including lot 469, a watercolour of Santa Maria Formosa by Michael Felmingham which sold for £260 and 19th century unsigned watercolours of Mount Vesuvius and Naples and an Italian landscape which sold for £1000 and £450 respectively.

Lot 523 was an interesting Malaysian watercolour from 1961 by Jehan Chan of fishing boats and huts which sold to an internet bidder for £500 and an exquisite miniature portrait of a lady dated 1787 which featured on the front of this sale’s catalogue sold for £200 against an estimate of £60-100.

Furniture sold well in this auction with some big pieces fetching large prices such as lot 533, a 20th century snooker/dining table complete with scoreboards which sold for £480 and a John Broadwood and Sons baby grand piano sold for £400.

One of our most gruesome lots was a World War I German trench club studded with hobnails which sold for £100 while at the other end of the scale a sterling silver and enamelled butterfly brooch sold for £85.
