Fine Art & Antique Sale

Wednesday 11th June

One of the lots already consigned for this sale is this
striking Tangerine Orange Whitefriars TV vase.

Whitefriars Glass was a company of English glassmakers and stained glass window manufacturers, (also known as James Powell and Sons) which had been in existence since the 17th century.

However it was not until after World War II that the TV vase above came into being.

The firm of Whitefriars was selected as an outstanding example of modern British Industry by the Festival of Britain held in 1951.  From 1962 Whitefriars Glass Ltd as it was now known specialised in freeform domestic glassware until Caithness Glass took over in 1981.

Employed as a designer in 1954 was Art student Geoffrey Baxter and it is his innovative flair which saw the introduction of the Television vase, Drunken Bricklayer vase and Banjo vase range of coloured textured vases.

As part of the production process Geoffrey Baxter used nails and bark and the like to produce moulds for the vases whilst also introducing vibrant colours such as Ruby, Kingfisher Blue, Meadow Green, Tangerine Orange, Pewter, Indigo, Cinnamon and Aubergine in 1969.

Geoffrey Baxter worked for Whitefriars Glass Ltd until its closure when the high labour costs of handmade glass made the company uncompetitive.

Closing date for entries for the Fine Art and Antique Sale is Friday 23rd May
